Danny-Boy Hatchard, who plays Lee, has opened up about the challenge, insisting the mental disorder affects everybody at some point in life.
Speaking to the Metro, Danny said: "When I first heard about it, I didn't know how long they wanted it to go on for. Now I know they want it to go on for quite a long time.
"I think in terms of doing this storyline though, they got the man for the job. I do have a very good understanding of how depression works."
Danny-Boy, 23, suggested that, while Lee's depression will impact everybody around him, it will also bring him closer to girlfriend Whitney Dean.
He continued: "A lot of people are thinking it's just going to be based around a young man's depression but depression on the whole affects everyone at some point in their lives.
"This is more appealing to me as an actor as opposed to Post-Traumatic Stress disorder which was the generic idea to go for, so this is a good solid storyline for me to have."
The BBC One soap has successfully tackled mental health many times in the past, including Stacey Slater's diagnosis with bipolar disorder.
