Bootcamp – I’d run a mile!

When someone mentions Ibiza it usually conjures up images of hard partying and A list celebrities holidaying on board enormous yachts and drinking champagne costing tens of thousands per bottle.

But for me it will now forever be linked with exercise – extremely intense exercise. But, to be fair, I felt a lot better after a week in bootcamp than I would have felt after a week of paryting!

For I was in Ibiza to spend a week at the No 1 Bootcamp. Before I arrived I considered myself fairly fit and active – walking at least five miles a day.

After the first day, when I was virtually collapsing with exhaustion, I reconsidered my opinion to not very fit at all.

Every day starts with an hour of exercise before breakfast, which was generally muesli, oats or fruit. It was delicious, all freshly made by Kate who runs the camp, but when your total calorie intake is around 1200 for women and xxx for men, the portion sizes are never going to be huge!

Breakfast was followed by another three hours of exercise, incorporating circuits, boxercise, aerobics or a hike. Followed by lunch – quinoa and vegetables and soup figured heavily.

All the food is free of wheat, gluten and processed sugar.

Another three hours of exercise followed – which was slightly, but only slightly, lower key including swimming, yoga and team games. But all played in blazing heat.

You get two snacks during the day too, again fruit or celery and cucumber sticks with home made hummus.

Supper was a highlight with chicken and fish featuring, though no red meat and afterwards there was a walk to complete your day’s exercise.

Master Trainer Richard Parcell was tasked with getting me fit - it was just as well he had a military background and was taking no prisoners. My regular moans that ‘I can’t do this’ were rightly ignored and we were pushed to our limits. Whether we were a Made in Chelsea star (Spencer Matthews was there when I was) or not.

And their results were phenomenal – we all weighed at least half a stone less after the week was over and some had lost a whopping 11lbs.

So would I do it again? Well it was the hardest thing I can ever remember having done (and I’ve given birth to two children!). But the feeling of achievement of having completed it was worth it.

And over two weeks on I’ve kept the weight off and I’m now an exercise convert. I’ve added to my five mile walking a day and now go running and do weight training and ab exercises every morning. I feel fitter and healthier than ever and that can never be a bad thing.
