The 36-year-old footballer even claimed that he’d been punching above his weight with 34-year-old Rebecca, who tragically died from breast cancer at the beginning of the month.

Rio told Esquire magazine: “My looks are an acquired taste. You play the cards you’ve been dealt.”

He also admitted that he and Rebecca were thinking of getting dogs for their three children.

“I’m coming round to the idea of having dogs,” he told the magazine. “My kids are bang into them.”

Last week it was reported that Rio thought his wife had five years left to live, after she was diagnosed with the disease just weeks before.

Following her shock death, Rio said: “She was a fantastic loving mother to our three beautiful children.

“She will be missed as a wife, sister, aunt, daughter and granddaughter. She will love on in our memory, as a guide and inspiration.

“Myself, my parents Janice and Julian, along with Rebecca’s parents, Lesley and Stephen, would like to thank our families, friends and my club colleagues who have rallied around in these desperate days, weeks and months.”
