I did the first nappy, yeah
In his first interview since his son was born on 23 July, the Duke of Cambridge has opened up about how he is coping as a first-time dad.
‘He’s a little bit of a rascal, put it that way,’ admitted William, when asked about baby George, and added: ‘he does like to keep having his nappy changed.’
But it seems that the new dad has this particular parenting skill mastered since stepping up to the challenge of changing the very first nappy – something he is very proud of.
Driving my son and my wife away from hospital was really important to me
‘I did the first nappy, yeah, ‘ said William, calling it ‘a badge of honour.’
‘I wasn’t allowed to get away with that. I had every midwife staring at me, “You do it. You do it”, he added.
But the 31 year-old said being able to be a hands-on dad is something that is important to him.
‘Where I can be I am as independent as, as I want to be,’ he said.
This is an attitude that both he and his wife Kate embody – as well as his younger brother Harry.
‘We’ve all grown up differently to other generations. And I very much feel if I can do it myself I want to do it myself.
‘And there are times where you can’t do it yourself and the system takes over or it’s appropriate to do things differently,’ said William.
This independence was demonstrated most significantly by William’s decision to drive his wife and newborn son home from hospital himself.
‘ I think driving your son and your wife away from hospital was really important to me. And I don’t like fuss so it’s much easier to just do it yourself. ‘
And on that car seat, the Prince confirmed he had done a practice run before his big moment.
‘Believe me, it wasn’t my first time, he laughed.
Prince William's Passion: New Hope, New Father a new documentary about his passion to preserve wildlife in Africa airs next month, but excerpts of the interview have been released today.
