Speaking in his New! column, the dad-of-three wrote: “According to new research, one in five girls of primary school age have already been on a diet.

“This is so sad. I know obesity among children is a problem, but some of these kids aren’t even overweight.”

Peter Andre continued: “We as parents have to try and explain to our kids that it’s important to eat well and that it’s good to be a healthy weight.

“If a doctor has put your child on a diet for health reasons then fair enough, but children should be concentrating on enjoying themselves rather than focusing on how they look.”

He finished firmly: We need to help guide them in the right way.”

Pete’s opinion is very different to that of Katie Hopkins and Celebrity Big Brother’s Helen Wood, who recently slammed the parents of overweight children in her own column.

Refusing to mince her words when it came to discussing the controversial issue, she said: "Speaking of those kids who do indeed carry excess blubber, who do I blame?

"Bloody simple answer to that, the parent. Your child, your responsibility. End of."

Helen finished: "It takes no time at all to whip up a healthy balanced meal and as for too expensive, pull the other one, a bag of sweet potatoes is about a quid and a full chicken a fiver to feed the whole fambo.

"Stop with the justification and stop feeding your brats doner kebabs and chips, you lazy a**e."

Katie Hopkins added: “There's loads of fat kids and we don't say anything because that would be fat-shaming, or bullying...well, I disagree completely.

“In England, we're far too soft on it and we seem to think it's okay that people are pureeing KFC to spoon-feed to their babies.”

Do you agree with Peter Andre - should children be less focused on their weight and more on enjoying themselves?

Or do you agree with Helen Wood and Katie Hopkins - should overweight children have their diets more strictly monitored by their parents?
