Ron Moody’s widow, Therese, announced the sad news today.

She said: "He brought joy to his family and to the hearts of many and will be greatly missed.

“He was singing until the end.”

The actor leapt to fame for his role as Fagin in Oliver!, the 1968 film version of the Charles Dickens classic.

He was nominated for an Oscar as a result of his amazing performance - and took home a Golden Globe, too.

"Fate destined me to play Fagin. It was the part of a lifetime," he said of his role.

The actor also starred in EastEnders back in 2003 as Edwin Caldecott, an old nemesis of Jim Branning.

At the time, he said: "EastEnders is like getting on the QE2, the most successful ship on television - and I enjoyed a nice cruise!

"My kids are very excited that I'm going to be in Albert Square as they watch it religiously and know all the characters.

"I had a very enjoyable time and it was lovely to work with June Brown [who plays Jim's wife, Dot Branning] - she's a national treasure."

Ron Moody had a lengthy career in TV and film, but revealed that one of his biggest regrets in life was turning down the role of Doctor Who.

He is survived by his wife and six children.

Our thoughts are with them at this sad time.
