Oliver Mellor has posted a series of tweets seemingly pointed at ex-lover Kym Marsh and her family after they slammed him as "scum" for exposing their secret fling.

Oliver, who played Coronation Street's Dr Matt Carter, recently made headlines when he revealed that he and Kym had fallen in love while working on the set of the soap.

He said: “We loved each other and we weren’t afraid to say it. It wasn’t something we intended to happen, but we couldn’t stop our feelings.

“We planned a future together. We dreamed about me moving up North and living together. We spoke of how wonderful life would be.”

Oliver later said it was mum-of-three Kym’s guilt at hurting her family that ended their affair - but, since speaking out, Kym and her family have been left angry over the betrayal.

The 32-year-old TV star was branded a “rat” and “scum” by Kym, her mum Pauline, sister Tracey and close pals - and now Oliver has taken to Twitter to fight back.

Using the title of Kym's autobiography From The Heart to make his point, Oliver tweeted:

His sudden outburst, which suggested Kym was a hypocrite, caused the Corrie star's sister (and plenty of her fans) to immediately leap to her defence:

An insider at Coronation Street told a national newspaper: "[Oliver] suffered a barrage of real abuse and was labelled all kinds of things – some really nasty.

"It seems he must have been simmering about it all before deciding to have a go back at Kym and her family.

“There is clearly no love lost now between them – talk about things ended bitterly. That is an understatement.”
