Mum of five, Katie Price, has had her fair share of critics weighing in on her parenting skills, whether it’s her decision to let daughter Princess dress up in make-up, or allowing her kids to appear on TV.
But the ever-defiant Katie Price has opened up about one incident that did managed to panic the proud parent.
Appearing on ITV’s Loose Women, the panellist spoke about a time when she was accused on child neglect, and was probed by authorities as a result.
The incident happened when the 37-year-old was out with former husband Peter Andre years back, leaving Harvey, now 13, at home with a nanny.
Katie cuddles up to Kieran and Harvey
The former couple came home to find Harvey – who suffers from Prader-Willi syndrome, as well as autism, ADHD and blindness – screaming at top of the stairs.
After the stair gate had mistakenly been left open, Harvey made his way up into the bathroom and sadly managed to burn himself after getting to the hot water tap.
She explained:
“When I got home I could hear him screaming upstairs. So I said to Pete and the nanny at the time, ‘Where’s Harvey?’
“Someone hadn’t shut the gate and because he couldn’t see he turned on the tap and scalded his whole leg. He was at hospital for three months.”
Obviously, saddened and panicked Katie immediately rushed her beloved son to hospital.
Though that didn’t stop somebody reporting the mother to authorities for child neglect in the midst of the family emergency. Which we can imagine in the last thing Katie and Peter needed while worrying about Harvey’s injuries.
Katie continued: “Someone at the first hospital reported me and said I must have done it on purpose. When they were going to discharge him, they said I couldn’t take him home.
“They told me I had been reported and social services have to clear it. The police came to my home and I had to show them the bath.”
However she explained she didn’t take the situation to heart too much, as she was happy that social services responded so quickly to allegations of abuse.
The discussion came up in response to the news that Kathryn Smith, 23, had been sentences to 24 years imprisonment for the murder of her 21-month-old daughter Ayeeshia Jane Smith by stamping on her.
Katie said: “You could see the police were embarrassed but, in a way, it’s good that they followed it up.”
