Katie Piper has admitted she relied on alcohol to get herself through her darkest moments after she had sulphuric acid thrown into her face in 2008.

The philanthropist hit the headlines in 2008 after the incident, which saw her vision in one eye become blurred.

She was also left with terrible skin burns and scarring and she has had more than 300 surgical procedures since the crime.

Katie has since gone on to set up charity Katie Piper Foundation which aims to help people suffering with burns and disfiguring injuries.

And while she may be focussed on her work, she has confessed to having one thing in particular that helped her forget about the more difficult times.

The star told the Daily Mirror that things became “too much” and so she used to turn to drink to help herself cope.

She said: “Without meaning to. I started relying on alcohol to get me through the days.”

Katie explained why she felt she needed to use alcohol to help her improve things in the short term.

She said: “I noticed a pattern of feeling, ‘Oh, I want a drink.’

“Some of the people close to me told me I was so different when I was drunk. I would get like that a couple of times a week. I knew it wasn’t healthy.”

Katie went on to see a counsellor who helped her understand why she had started to drink more and find a different way of dealing with her problems.

She now insists that she tries to maintain a positive influence with her actions in her life.

She said: “There is never an end and no one ever gets to a certain point in their life and thinks, Well, that’s it.’

“Whether it’s career or personal, we’re always ongoing and sometimes we’re going backwards as well.

“I don’t really believe that barriers exist unless we create them and feed them.”
