He said ‘I want to grow as an artist and I'm taking a step out, I want my music to mature.’

Fans took to Twitter in despair following the interview, but some of Justin’s critics expressed rejoice.

Actress Jennifer Lawrence even expressed her apparent upset, tweeting: ‘justin bieber is retiring what no you're kidding stop no i cant why what when how what why no lies stop crying why justin no stop bye what.’

Some fans are speculating that the revelation is part of a ‘joke’ on the singer’s behalf.

A video surfaced of Justin after he had spent the night with a fan.

This comes after a year of controversy for Justin, which included an alleged visit to a brothel as well as angering Argentinian fans after kicking the country's flag across the stage during the South American leg of his world tour.

To add to the controversy, a video of the pop star was also leaked onto the internet, showing him asleep in his hotel room after spending the night with a fan.

Time will tell if Justin’s new album will, indeed, be his last.

His new album ‘Journals’ is out on the 23rd December.
