Hugh Jackman, famed for his work in Les Mis and The X-Men, has revealed that he was recently treated for skin cancer - and has begged his fans to be careful.

"Please don't be foolish like me. Get yourself checked"

Sharing the news via Instagram, the actor posted a photo of his bandaged face and explained to fans what happened when his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, implored him to visit a doctor and get himself checked out.

"Deb said to get the mark on my nose checked. Boy, was she right! I had a basil cell carcinoma."

"Please don't be foolish like me. Get yourself checked. And USE sunscreen!!!"

Basal cell carcinomas, typically referred to as BCCs, often look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars.

They are caused by intense UV exposure, which is why sunscreen is so important, but they are rarely life-threatening. However they can be highly disfiguring and destructive to tissue if left untreated, which is why it's SO important to get them checked quickly.

We're glad that Hugh Jackman is raising awareness of skin cancer - and, more importantly, that he has had his treated.
