It is no secret that Drew Barrymore has a troubled relationship with her mother Jaid, but the actress rarely speaks about it nowadays.
"My relationship with my mom is so complicated"
However, in a new interview, the actress explained that, with a second daughter on the way, she can't let Jaid back into her life at the moment. It's just too "complicated".
She said: "Ugh, I mean, my relationship with my mom is so complicated. I've always been empathetic toward my mom, and I was even more so when I had a kid and we had a really amazing conversation about it.
"However, it hasn't enabled me to lessen the distance. It's the hardest subject in my life. I've never just been angry with her. I've always felt guilt and empathy and utter sensitivity. But we can't really be in each other's lives at this point."
Drew added that becoming part of husband Will Kopelman's solid family was eye-opening, as it allowed her to experience all that she never dreamed she could.
"I didn't think I would ever get to experience that.
"This is so safe and positive and healthy because they have their values intact. It was huge for me. And that's what I want for my family."
It's understandable; Drew's mother Jaid, a struggling Hollywood actress and inveterate party-goer, took her daughter to nightclubs when she was just eight and to auditions before she was a year old, has a relationship with her daughter which Drew has described as "my greatest battle"’.
Speaking with a UK newspaper in 2010, Drew said: "My own mum cared about Hollywood and I didn’t. I wanted to act and I loved the creativity of it, but I didn’t care for the lifestyle… Everyone wants consistency in their family life, and that wasn’t the case for me.
"I grew up in a family that was multifaceted, sexually oriented, and pretty much open to everything"
"I grew up in a family that was multifaceted, sexually oriented, and pretty much open to everything. And because I was working, my friends were all adults. I had a tough time going to different schools because people knew me from films and I was the fat child who got beaten up every day.
However, nowadays, Drew couldn't be happier. The Wedding Singer star is currently pregnant with her second daughter - she is already mum to little Olivia - and is already thinking of her next bundle of joy.
"I think I'd like to have more. In the back of my head, I'm already timing if I was to have another when that would occur."
We hope that, someday, Drew and Jaid manage to repair their relationship but, until then, we're glad to see that Drew is doing what's best for her and her family.
