David, 39, recently filmed a documentary that saw him trek through the Amazon rainforest, ahead of the World Cup in Brazil, but his safety wasn’t Victoria’s main priority.
In an interview with Michael Palin, David said of his 40-year-old wife: “She gave me a bit of friendly advice. ‘What are you going to do about your hair? I can’t even go to humid countries because of my hair – what are you going to do?’
“’You’ll have to wear a hat the whole time.’” David did take fashion designer Victoria’s advice and wore a hat for most of his trip – but for a different reason.
He added: “When I have a helmet on, nobody knows it’s me. It’s one of the only times when I actually feel really free.”
Speaking at a press conference for the documentary, David admitted he had his own fears for his trek through the rainforest, mentioning a particular encounter with a frog.
He said: “I am not a big frog fan. It was bright orange and I was told it was pretty dangerous. I was a bit nervous about that.”
The point of David’s trip was to find a whole village of people who didn’t know who he was, and it took him 12 days and 800 miles to find it.
David revealed the inspiration behind the trek was when he found himself alone in a London park, following his retirement from professional football.
He said: “All of a sudden I was on my own and thinking, ‘You know, I haven’t done this for 15 years’. That was kind of the first thing that made me think I should do something where I can go into a situation I’ve not been in before.”
