Charlotte Church has hit out at both Miley and Rihanna, brandishing them as ‘submissive sex objects’ in a male dominated, sexist music industry. The former child star spoke of how the industry has a ‘culture of demeaning women.’
The 27 year-old led a lecture at the Radio Academy Festival near Manchester, where she joined a list of stars to condemn the current state of the pop music world.
Former child star Charlotte depicted how she herself was encouraged to dress more provocatively in her music videos, as she grew older.
"There was a big clamour to cover my breasts, as they wanted to keep me as young as possible," she said of the early years of her career. "Then it became, 'You should definitely get them out, they look great.'"
She expressed regret at giving in to pressure to become more sexualised, which is what she says singer Rihanna has succumbed to, particularly in her new video for ‘Pour It Up’. She used the video as an example of male music bosses using sensualised females to increase their profits.
Charlotte remarked: "It is a multi-billion dollar business that relies upon short burst messaging to sell product. And there is no easier way to sell something than to get some chick to get her t**s out, right?"
Targeting former Hannah Montana actress Miley Cyrus, 20, Charlotte said “The women generally filling these roles are very young, often previous child stars or Disney tweens who are simply interested in getting along in an industry glamourised to be the most desirable career for young women.”
The outburst comes following a sequence of open letters from Sinead O’Connor, which denounced Miley’s recent frolics.
