Britain’s Got Talent has always been applauded for its diversity among the contestants, and last night’s explosive and emotional show was no different. Millions of people tuned in to see Boogie Storm’s impressive dance routine, Trip Hazard’s cute dog act and Beau Dermott’s incredible performance of Defying Gravity.
But not all the viewers were happy with the winning verdict.
Judges were left in tears after watching magician, Richard Jones, deliver a touching and patriotic performance which catapulted him into first place.
It is the first time a magician has ever won Britain’s Got Talent, and the talented corporal decided to use his opportunity in the final to tell the story of a prisoner of war through magic. Recreating card tricks by war veteran, Fergus Anckorn, Richard then went on to bring the 97-year-old on stage with him.
The judges were left wiping tears away, with Amanda saying, “Oh my goodness, Richard – that was so incredible, poignant, noble, brilliantly British – I just loved everything about that.”
However, in true controversial Britain’s Got Talent style, some viewers accused Richard of using patriotism instead of performing.
It isn’t the first time this year that the show has come under fire. Many of this year’s contestants have been bashed on social media for being professionally trained, or for having more experience than they let on.
But not all fans agreed, with most viewers completely touched by the emotional performance and excited to have a magician as a winner for the first time.
Richard won the £250,000 cash prize and will now be performing for the Queen at the Royal Variety Show.
