The film, which grossed over a billion dollars, on its initial release, follows the story of star-crossed lovers Jack Dawson and Rose Dewitt Bukater and their romance on the ill-fated ship’s maiden voyage.
Film lovers across the country voted the tragic love story, which stars Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Winslet, as the movie most likely to have them reaching for the tisues.
One voter commented: ‘It has to be Titanic every time for me. I start sobbing the moment the ship hits the iceberg.’
Titanic was voted as the greatest tearjerker by nearly a quarter of voters. Coming second was 2012’s Les Misérables.
One Les Misérables fan said what they think sets cinema-goers off: ‘It is the music which always gets me with these films, I only have to hear the opening bars of My Heart Will Go On, Bright Eyes, or especially Unchained Melody, and I start to weep… This probably explains why I was such an emotional wreck at by the end of Les Misérables – I don’t think I’ve ever cried at a film that much before.’
Disney classic Bambi came in third place and War Horse took fourth place in the vote. It seems animals are a common theme in some of the most popular tearjerker movies.
‘I’m not a very emotional person, in fact the only film I cry watching is Watership Down – the sight of all those bunnies dying gets me every time… I find this really strange as I thought War Horse was a bit boring and didn’t even shed a single tear when Bambi’s mother got shot, yet at the first sign of rabbit peril I can’t control the waterworks.’
George Lucas's E.T took fifth place and Patrick Swayze's 'Ghost' took pride of place at eighth place.
A spokesperson from FreeDeliveryLand.co.uk said: ‘Though not everyone would admit it, we’ve all cried at a film at one point in our life.’
On the no.1 tearjerker movie, FreeDeliveryLand.co.uk said: ‘Titanic has the perfect combination of factors to make it the nation’s favourite tearjerker. It has the epic plot, the doomed lovers and extremely moving music. I was definitely teary-eyed the first couple of times I watched it.’
