The newlyweds consisted of both same-sex and heterosexual couples and the cameras showed them exchanging rings live during the awards ceremony.

Rapper Macklemore sang his hit ‘Same Love’ which highlights the campaign for gay marriage to be legalised.

The song was inspired by Macklemore’s uncle, who is gay, and his frustration at homophobia in the hip-hop industry.

33 couples of all shapes and sizes exchanged vows during the performance.

With lyrics such as ’no freedom til we’re equal, damn right I support it,’ the song has become an anthem in the fight for gay rights.

During the performance, actress Queen Latifah stepped out on stage and said: ‘We are gathered here to celebrate love and harmony.’

The camera then revealed the couples standing in the aisle, ready to exchange rings with ‘everyone watching around the world as witnesses.’

The couples said their ‘I do’s’ when Queen Latifah said: ‘Do you each declare to take each other as spouses.’

Madonna serenaded the newlyweds.

Macklemore and Queen Latifah were then joined onstage by Madonna as she sang a rendition of her hit ‘Open Your Heart To Me.’

Backstage, Queen Latifah said: ‘I hope this is inspiration to all the rappers out there and hip hop artists out there that they can continue to tackle any subjects you want.’

‘Same Love’ was nominated to Best Song, but lost out to 17-year-old newcomer Lorde.

Same-sex couples can legally marry in California, but there has been some opposition against the law.
