Beauty trends on trial: Peel-off face masks

peel-off face masks

There's nothing more grossly satisfying than getting loads of grit out of your skin - we know that. So we tried all the most popular face masks out there at the moment - and yes, the black one DOES hurt.

We reckon the obsession started waaay back in primary school when you put PVA glue all over your hands JUST so that it would dry and you could pick it off.

Right?! Please agree that you did this so we're not the only ones...

Anyhow, the idea of peel-off face masks is much like the morbid fascination we had back then - only this time, you get to literally SEE all the grit come off your face afterwards.

We know. Gross. But weirdly fascinating.

We gathered together members from our team with oily skin, dry skin and combination/sensitive skin so that we could test out all the most popular peel-off face masks out there at the moment. Yep, including that terrifying-looking black one.

And the resulting video, we have to admit, is PRETTY hilarious.

Things to remember before doing a peel-off face mask

  1. Make sure you cleanse your skin before whacking one on. Otherwise, it won't get into your pores as much as it could and get all that horrible gunge out. Not that we're saying you have gungey faces, of course!
  1. If you have the time/effort, it is a good idea to steam your face beforehand. This isn't essential (it is for the black face mask!) but it can open your pores up even more to really clean them
  1. As tempting as it might be, do NOT attempt a peel-off face mask in the bath. We know it may seem like the perfect place to do one, but TRUST us - they do NOT dry properly, and you're left with a face full of half-dried gunk
  1. Have kitchen towel down ready for when you peel off so you're not finding tiny bits of dried mask/skin on your carpet for weeks to come
  1. Follow the instructions to the letter - you don't wanna mess about with your skin!

Peel off face masks for oily/problem skin

Jane

My skin is very oily – I've only recently started using oil-free makeup, but I find that, by the end of the day, my skin is still quite oily. I normally get spots mainly on my chin, so I was hoping one of these face masks might help budge some of the blemishes on my chin and reduce the oil.

Soap and Glory What A Peeling! De-Clog Mask

How easy was it to put on? SO easy – it came with a small spatula which made it so easy to put on, and there are two masks in a pack so you can either do one with a friend or just save one for another timeHow long did it take to dry? I absolutely loved it - UNTIL it came to peeling it off. Despite leaving it for 30 minutes to dry, it was still wet on my cheeks and around my nose which made it so tricky to peel offDid it peel off well? I couldn't even pick it all off due to it not drying, so eventually had to use a face wipe to get the extra parts offWhat did it smell like? It smelt great! I also loved that it was bright pinkHow much do you apply? The pods are single-use, which helps you to know how much to put on – but I didn't end up using the entire thingFinal thoughts? Annoyingly, it also left my skin with a bit of a pink tint, which definitely wasn't ideal. If you're going to try this face mask, I would say leave it on for longer than the allotted time to be sure!3/5

Shills Pore Purifying Peel-Off Black Mask

How easy was it to put on? I was a little scared of this one as it's got a bit of a reputation, but it was AMAZING! I should mention that I have the most un-sensitive skin ever, so it might be a bit different for other people who have slightly more sensitive skin, and I definitely wouldn't recommend it to people with sensitive skin. I'd definitely recommend only putting it on problem areas – so for me, my forehead, nose and chinHow long did it take to dry? The packaging recommends leaving it on for 30 minutes, but as I didn't cover my entire face, it only took around 20 minutes to dryDid it peel off well? SO well – it was really satisfying! I actually tried this again a couple of days later and could really see it pulling the blackheads out – a big plus if you like those terrible videos on Facebook...What did it smell like? There wasn't a really strong smellHow much do you apply? It was tough to judge, but the consistency helped to apply it – just make sure you have an even layerFinal thoughts? In future, I'd leave putting it on my forehead as this was probably the only area where it slightly hurt pulling it off. The instructions say to steam your face beforehand, so we used the Homedics Facial Sauna to open up our pores which really helped, but if you don't have one, I imagine putting your face over a bowl of hot water or doing the face mask after a bath would work just as well. Full marks for this one!5/5

Montagne Jeunesse 7th Heaven Cucumber Peel Off Mask

How easy was it to put on? It looks like a clear gel when you put it on which makes it quite difficult to see where you've already put it on, so I think I would have preferred it to be a brighter colour – just so I could have seen where I was putting itHow long did it take to dry? It only took about 10 minutes to dry – not too long at all! Did it peel off well? It was super-easy to peel offWhat did it smell like? LOVELY!**How much do you apply? **It's a single-use sachet, so you just apply the whole thing!Final thoughts? I was actually really shocked by this mask, as it only cost £1 but it was really lovely! It dried really nicely, smelt lovely and was super easy to peel off. I loved how fresh my skin felt afterwards and would definitely buy this one again!5/5

Peel off face masks for dry skin

Polly

I’m a complete novice to face masks, and by that I mean I had literally no idea how they worked before all this – but I found they were (mostly) straightforward and easy to use. I have the sort of skin that most face creams dry out completely, so was concerned a face mask would be too much - but my skin felt, on the whole, pretty well-nourished after using these.

How easy was it to put on? It didn't exactly glide on, but it wasn't too thick or stickyHow long did it take to dry? About 10 minutesDid it peel off well? It took a few goes, but most of it peeled away without any need to scrub**What did it smell like? **Pretty much odourlessHow much do you apply? Not too much – it spreads quite wellFinal thoughts? I noticed quite a few spots pop up a few days after using this – which likely meant it lifted a lot of dirt. Overall, a good result!3/5

No7 Beautiful Skin Pore Vacuum Mask

How easy was it to put on? This was definitely the trickiest. I found the consistency far too thick for my (very beginner) taste. It was very difficult to spread evenlyHow long did it take to dry? Quite a while – a bit over 10 minutesDid it peel off well? It was quite challenging to peel given its consistency – required quite a lot of scrubbing at the end**What did it smell like? **Completely odourless! How much do you apply? I found it quite difficult to apply, so I ended up using quite a lot – probably more than recommended Final thoughts? This was a bit too stressful to apply for it to become a regular occurrence in my skincare routine, although my skin felt good after4/5

Superdrug Tropical Cocktail Peel-Off Mask

How easy was it to put on? Really easy! It spread out evenly, and was a nice consistency which made it much easier to applyHow long did it take to dry? About 10 minutesDid it peel off well? Yes! Huge chunks came off at once – which made for VERY satisfying peelingWhat did it smell like? A lovely fruity scentHow much do you apply? Pretty much the whole sachet, which is good because then you know exactly how much should go on your faceFinal thoughts? This face mask was definitely my favourite. The low cost was also appealing, and my skin felt really soft afterwards!5/5

Peel off face masks for combination/sensitive skin

Emma

My skin is combination AND very sensitive. It's dry round the edges and oily on my T-zone (middle of forehead and nose), as well as being very easily irritated by the slightest thing.

I was hoping to find a peel off face mask which would A) be fun to peel off, B) not irritate my skin and C) MAYBE balance out my skin's strange oil habits. Thankfully, on the whole, the masks I tried did not disappoint!

Formula 10.0.6 BE BERRY Clear Illuminating Peel Mask

How easy was it to put on? I found it really easy to put on, but it wasn't immediately obvious how much you should put on, and I think I used too much as it took a bit longer than 10 minsHow long did it take to dry? It took quite a bit longer than the 10 minutesDid it peel off well? When it DID dry it came off very easily – almost in one clean sweep! What did it smell like? The fruity flavours of raspberry and acai smelled deliciousHow much do you apply? I couldn't quite tell, and this meant that I probably applied too much and it didn't dry wellFinal thoughts? My face felt really nice and clean afterwards, but it should DEFINITELY be kept away from hair round your hairline - and your eyebrows! Sadly, I did have a few spots the day after which wasn't great, but I do have very sensitive skin so the slightest thing can set it off. They went after a couple of days so it wasn't too bad, but I'm not sure how good it is for sensitive skin if it causes small reactions like that. Then again, you get LOADS of product in the tube which is a definite plus! 3/5

Sanctuary 5-minute Radiance Peel-Off Face Mask

How easy was it to put on? This was SO easy to put on as the consistency was quite firm, so it didn't dribble down my face at all and set straight inHow long did it take to dry? Sadly, I found that it took a bit longer than five minutes to dry – not exactly a 5-minute mask!Did it peel off well? It felt like it took aaages to peel off and it did tug on my skin as I was peeling off which left it feeling slightly tenderWhat did it smell like? Absolutely DELICIOUS, I felt like a fresh goddess after using this face maskHow much do you apply? I had to put quite a lot of product on to get a good coverage which made me think you wouldn't get many masks out of the tubeFinal thoughts? My skin felt AMAZING straight after using but it did get quite dry on my normal dry areas of skin after going outside so moisturising afterwards is definitely necessary, but overall would definitely recommend!4/5

Lavender Peel-Off Modelling Mask by Masque Bar

How easy was it to put on? I LOVED how this product came with a little spoon/applicator, it made it so much easier to put on and you get less on your handsHow long did it take to dry? It started to dry very quickly and I didn't need to wait the full amount of time until I could feel it was ready to come offDid it peel off well? It literally almost fell off my skin once I'd began peeling – amazing! What did it smell like? There wasn't a hugely strong smell reallyHow much do you apply? I ended up only using about two-thirds of the mixture so there was quite a bit left overFinal thoughts? I wasn't quite sure exactly how it would work as it wasn't like the other peel off masks at ALL – it's a bit more DIY as it comes in powder form and you add water using the spoon, but once it was ready to go it actually felt really nice on my skin, very cooling and refreshing. It didn't feel like it got into my pores quite as much as the others did, but my skin felt fresh and clean afterwards and it definitely kept my skin clear for the next couple of days.5/5

Our thoughts on the HoMedics Fresh Face Facial Steamer

Jane: "I wouldn't ever think to buy one myself because I don't tend to use products like that very often. I also live in a tiny flat so there's no storage space! But overall it was good and made my skin feel really clean – perfect for opening the pores before a face mask!"

Polly: "I enjoyed the steamer because it was quite an exciting novelty for me but, to be honest, I think I get better results by hanging my face over the colander when I’m draining pasta."

Emma: "I have always wanted to try a facial steamer – I LOVE going for facial treatments! So the thought of being able to do them myself was really exciting. I really liked this product because it looks neat and tidy, and I like the colours. It was very easy to use, although I would have liked a bit more control over how long the steam was coming out for, as the steam just came out automatically and kept going until the water had run out, but apart from that I liked it!"

Buy it from Amazon, £69.
