It's been centuries since William Shakespeare put out his last work but his words still inspire and entertain all over the world.

They have also provided the basis for many film adaptations - some of which we bet you didn't even realise were based on Shakespeare's work!

Take a look at our round-up below and see how many of your favourite movies were based on William's tales...

She’s The Man (2006) is based on Twelfth Night

Shakespeare’s tale of gender-bending, disguises and love triangles made the perfect recipe for this new-generation update.

In Shakespeare’s original comedy, a young woman named Viola is involved in a shipwreck with separates her from her twin brother. Disguising herself as the male Cesario, Viola acts as go-between for a wealthy Duke and his romantic interest. Chaos ensues when Viola begins to fall for the Duke and the Duke’s would-be lover develops feelings for Viola/Cesario.

In She's The Man Amanda Bynes plays the role of Viola when posing as her brother to play on a boy’s football team at high school.

The film may not be as revered as the originial but it's one of Amanda Bynes' best comedic performances AND it introduced us to the delightful Channing Tatum...what's not to love?!

The Lion King (1994) is based on Hamlet

We can't believe we went so long without noticing that one of Disney's most classic tales shares SO MANY similarities with Shakespeare's Hamlet.

In hindsight, it's so easy to see how Disney based their story on the play: the proud king (Mufasa) is 'accidentally' killed by his evil, power-hungry brother (Scar). After fleeing the kingdom, the prince and rightful heir (Simba) returns to bring Scar down. The film even includes details such as Simba’s pair of fast-talking friends Timon and Pumbaa (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in the original) to make it all the more Hamlet-esque.

The animated version has a lot more singing and a significantly happier ending but still, it's a great way for kids (and adults) to connect to the famous Shakespeare tale!

West Side Story (1961) is based on Romeo & Juliet

Ok so this one might be a little more obvious - swapping Italy or New York City’s Upper West Side and the wealthy families of Capulet and Montague for rival gangs the Sharks and the Jets, this hit film is now almost as famous as the original!

The tale of Romeo and Juliet’s forbidden love is given a twist with issues of race, immigration, and class conflict - and more than a few musical numbers

The Puerto Rican Maria and the Polish-American Tony take over the titular roles, with most of the plot remaining true to Shakespeares words.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999) is based on The Taming of the Shrew

10 Things I Hate About You stays fairly close to the orginial in its teen adaptation of The Taming Of The Shrew; teenager Bianca is looking for a date to the prom but her father but will only let her go if her older, colder sister Kat "The Shrew" finds a date as well.

With a cast including Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger and and Joseph Gordon-Levitt this film was actually hugely enjoyable and is widely considered a 90s classic. Not to mention it got teenagers actually interested in Shakespare!

Who knew William Shakespeare would be so influential in the genre of teen high school comedy?!

A Thousand Acres (1997) is based on King Lear

The story - a dying old man is dividing his estate among his three daughters. Remind you of anything?

A Thousand Acres puts a slight twist on King Lear, making three daughters in the story sisters coming to terms with their traumatic past experiences rather than villains.

The dying man in this version is Larry Cook (Jason Robards), and his children are Ginny (Jessica Lange), Rose (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Caroline (Jennifer Jason Leigh).

Men of Respect (1991) is based on Macbeth

Macbeth takes the form of a gritty mob drama in this 0s film.

John Turturro stars as Macbeth-figure Mike Battaglia, who — at the urging of his Lady Macbeth-esque wife Ruthie (Katherine Borowitz) — plans a hostile takeover of the mob.

Forbidden Planet (1956) is based on The Tempest

Rather than getting stranded on an island, the space crew in this adaptation of The Tempest ends up on a seemingly utopian planet.

Morbius (Walter Pidgeon) acts as Prospero, keeping a protective hold over his daughter Alta (Anne Francis) — Miranda as Shakespeare wrote it.

Mirroring the original story, the daughter falls in love with one of the outsiders against her father’s wishes.
