The American government has finally added the use of cannabis to their official cancer advice website.
The National Cancer Institute now advises that cannabis, and cannabinoids ‘may be useful in treating the side effects of cancer and cancer treatment.’
Benefits of the drug include: anti-inflammatory, blocking cell growth, preventing growth of blood vessels that supply tumours, antiviral activity and relieving muscle spasms.
On top of all this, cancer cells were killed in mice that were given cannabis - seeming to prove that the drug does indeed inhibit its growth.
There are now two FDA approved medications for cancer patients available in the US which contain Cannabinoids.
In the UK, the situation is slightly different, with THC being present in prescription drug Sativex, but it is not yet used on a wider basis.
But now America has got the go ahead, perhaps Britain will follow suit too.
