Burmese worker ‘confesses’ to murdering British backpackers in Thailand

A Burmese man has admitted to murdering British holiday-makers Hannah Witheridge and David Miller.

The pair were found dead on a beach on the Thai island of Koh Tao last month.

David, 24, was thought to have drowned after being beaten by the killer whilst Hannah, 23, died after suffering head and facial injuries.

Police also suspect that the graduate teacher may also have been raped.

The man who has confessed to the murders has not yet been arrested but is being detained whilst DNA tests are carried out.

Deputy national police chief Lieutenant General Jaktip Chaijinda told Reuters: “The investigation has advanced considerably.”

He continued: “Three Burmese workers were detained and we took their DNA for testing. During the investigation one of them admitted to killing the two foreigners.”

It may be another day before an arrest is made, the police chief told journalists.

“We still have to wait for DNA tests results which we expect to have in 14 hours from now in order to confirm this.”

Miss Witheridge’s family flew out to Thailand following the horrific murders and have since managed to repatriate their daughter’s body.

The family of Mr Miller have since revealed they have received little information over their son’s death, but took to social media to speak out about their immense sadness following the death of their ‘heroic’ son.
