User jojostai1012, from Shanghai, posted a series of disturbing photos to her profile, including one with her belongings and bed set on fire, and another with her legs dangling precariously out of the window.
'I will haunt you day and night after I'm dead' wrote jojostai1012 to her ex-boyfriend.
The young woman then posted pictures of her bed on fire, followed by a shot from her high rise apartment window.
Although it's unclear what happened next, a Chinese forum called Mop shared a photo of a body next to a pool of water in a car park - which seemed to relate to the apartment building jojostai1012 was living in.
According to the DailyDot, a neighbour of jojostai1012 confirmed she had committed suicide.
Another man who claimed to be the woman's friend, posted a screenshot of the last messages he exchanged with her - where she stated she was 'going to leave.'
About two weeks ago, the young woman began posting Instagram pictures with worrying captions - alluding to the fact that she'd been left devastated by a recent break up.
Accompanying a picture of a young man, she wrote 'I never thought that you'd deceive me, but I still love you.'
She also wrote that since the break up she'd been unable to eat or sleep and keeps crying. And despite going out with guys who are more handsome and wealthy than her ex boyfriend - she says she can't 'accept anyone else.'
There is speculation that the story is a hoax, due to no reports of a similar suicide in the Shanghai media - though some people have questioned if this would even be reported.
