As we're sure you're already aware, women have been posting no makeup" selfies of themselves - a picture of them wearing no make up - on social media sites and nominating their friends to do the same.

Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have seen soaring numbers of women posing for snaps wearing no make-up.

And, after a little gentle persuading from Cancer Research UK - as well as several media outlets (including Closer Online) - the women taking part in the brave barefaced selfie trend have also been donating a few pounds to the charity too. Which is just amazing.

This means that, as well as "raising awareness", the charity has seen a MASSIVE increase in the volume of donations - well done, ladies!

Carolan Davidge, director of communications at Cancer Research UK said, "The #nomakeupselfie Twitter trend isn't something Cancer Research UK started - but it's great to see so many people getting involved to help raise awareness of cancer amongst their friends and family.

The charity said it was still looking into the exact rise in the number of donations but said there had been an "unprecedented" number of text donations throughout the day.

A spokeswoman said tens of thousands of text donations have been from people getting involved in the latest online craze today alone.

The Breast Cancer Campaign said it had also received a boost in funding as a result of the campaign.

James Elliot, the charity's head of digital engagement, said: "It's great to see so many people getting involved and coming together to help raise money and awareness of cancer.

"Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK and the public have shown how much they care by not only posting pictures, but also sharing information about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and making donations to help us fund life-saving research.

"We have received over £15,000 in donations so far, which has only been made possible from the public getting behind this campaign. We're really grateful for everyone's support."
