Betty Mbereko, 40, and her son Farai Mbereko, 23, claim to be very much in love, and Betty has admitted that she is now six months pregnant with his child- and her grandchild.
Betty, who was widowed 12 years ago when her son was 11, admitted to the village court council that the pair have been in a relationship for the past three years.
The single mother explained that she had worked hard in raising the funds to send her son to school, and felt she had the rights to his money over any other woman.
‘Look, I strove alone to send my son to school and no one helped me. Now you see that my son is working and you accuse me of doing something wrong.
‘Let me enjoy the products of my sweat,’ she argued.
Her son backed his partner up, promising to pay off the debt his father had left when he passed away.
‘I know my father died before he finished paying the bride price and I am prepared to pay it off,’ he said.
‘It is better to publicise what is happening because people should know that I am the one who made my mother pregnant.’
But village headman Nathan Muputirwa strongly disagrees, stating:
‘We cannot allow this to happen in our village, mashura chaiwo aya,. In the past they would have to be killed but today we cannot do it because we are afraid of the police.’
